Fifty-one summaries, one for every state and the District of Columbia. What you file, how many days or hours you owe, what you have to keep, and whether anybody tests or evaluates your student. Every entry ends with the statute and a link, so you can check our reading against the code rather than taking our word for it.

This is general information, not legal advice. We are a small press, not your lawyer, and nothing here is a review of your particular situation. Homeschool law is set state by state and it changes, sometimes mid-session and sometimes without much notice. Every entry carries its statute and its source, and the whole file was read and dated in July 2026, with that date printed inside it. Before a filing deadline, confirm against your own state's current code or your state organisation. If we have gone stale, write and tell us and we will correct it for everyone.
What is in it
- A quick-reference table covering all fifty-one at a glance: regulation level, the notice you file, days or hours, and whether testing or evaluation applies.
- A full entry for each state, with the same six headings every time: notice to file, days or hours, recordkeeping, testing or evaluation, required subjects, and high school records. Where the law has moved lately there is a note on the change.
- The statute cited at the foot of every entry, with a source link. Alabama's entry, for one, names Ala. Code sections 16-28-1, 16-28-3, 16-28-5, 16-28-7 and 16-28-8, along with the CHOOSE Act.
- The awkward states written out properly. Where a state has several routes, the entry walks each one, because in Alabama or California the answer to "what do I file" depends entirely on which route you took.
What is not in it
No district forms. Several states want a specific piece of paper that only your district issues, and we cannot hand you that; the entry tells you what it is called and who holds it. No transcript, no course descriptions, no records forms, no guide. Those are separate files.
Straight answers
Is it editable? Yes. A Word .docx file, not a picture of a document. Print your state's entry for the front of the binder and annotate it with your own deadlines.
We are moving states. Then this is the file to have open. The rules change completely at the state line, and the notice you filed in one state does nothing in the next.
How current is it? Read in July 2026, and dated so you can see for yourself how old that is by the time you buy. We would rather print the date than imply the file is evergreen. It is not, and no file about state law is.
One child or all of them? All of them. One purchase, one household, for as long as you teach.
About the price, honestly
$12 on its own. It is also inside the Homeschool High School Records System at $39, next to the transcript workbook, the 131 academic course descriptions, the Bible descriptions, the records pack and the guide. Any three of our standalone files come to at least $42, and all four come to $66. This one is the cheapest thing we sell and it stands alone perfectly well. With one other file you are at $26 to $36, still under. Add a third and you are past $39, so at that point buy the system instead.
